The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources is considering the development of a proactive approach to properly respond to natural disasters. This follows a series of earth quakes experienced recently in the Fiji Group.
To date the total number of earthquakes in the region is 13 and the Ministry is pulling its resources to forecast geological disasters considering that the month of June and July have registered a rise in earth movements.
Permanent Secretary Lt.Col Neumi Leweni said this is necessary in order to properly monitor and prevent the occurrence of disasters.
“We urgently need to improve our Meteorological Monitoring especially in disaster prone areas,” Lt Col Leweni adds.
He adds that while the public should not be overly alarmed, the most important thing is to be prepared at all times.
“Most of these earthquakes occur outside the monitoring zone which is both a threat and a challenge and we are looking at increase efforts in the rural areas.
“The frequent occurrence indicates that earthquakes are far more frequent than cyclones.
Therefore, the onus is on the public to be prepared at all times.
