The Education Minister Filipe Bole has called on the people of Gau to stand up and have pride in their secondary school.
Upon his visit to 10 schools on the island last week the minister was not happy with what he saw at Gau Secondary School, especially with buildings on the verge of collapse.
The materials for renovations and upgrading which the ministry had supplied have been left idle and no one volunteered to carry out the work.
Mr Bole said most villages have focussed on the development of their primary schools but neglected the secondary school.
“It must be noted that when students complete their primary education, Gau Secondary School is the next institution on the island that will extend and expand their children’s education,” Mr Bole said.
“It is a wonder that students in the school have done exceptionally well in the past external examinations. Imagine how they could perform had they been provided with the best facilities.
“The people of Gau must stand up and be counted because this school needs your support”, he said.
The Minister did not mince his words when he told the people of Gau to take pride in their secondary school and come forward to assist in any way they could for the sake of their children.
Officers from the ministry’s Assets Monitoring Unit and secondary section will make the necessary assessments for the buildings and staffing, and contractors will be sought to carry out the much-needed repairs.
