Two disciplinary institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly strengthen the fight against crime.
The Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Prisons and Correctional Services signed the MOU Wednesday 2nd at the Ministry of Defense headquarters, Government Buildings, Suva.
The Minister for Defense, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, welcomed the move.
“This is a milestone achievement for the two agencies to foster mutual understanding in areas of common interest,” Ratu Epeli said.
“The concept of institutionalising initiatives and intents has brought about sectoral divisions and turf protection amongst agencies, which is a barricade to achieving institutional objectives. Yes, such initiatives not only maximises cooperation but categorically sets out the right rhythm for the way forward in achieving corporate outcomes through optimum sharing of resources, skills, knowledge and information,” he added.
In fostering this partnership, he said the two institutions have become increasingly aware of the role they play.
Ratu Epeli added both agencies have corporate obligations to Government and the public at large by providing better service delivery to the community for the maintenance of law and order.
“It effectively translates to reducing the overall criminal offence rate and aggressively embarks on initiatives to enhancing programmes of rehabilitation of offenders into the society.”
