The Attorney General Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has confirmed that three Sri Lankan Resident Magistrates have handed in their resignation.
They are Acting Chief Magistrate Mr Pamila Ratnayake and two Presiding Magistrates Ms Kaweendra Nanayakkara and Mr Lakmal Wickramasooriya.
“The Resident Magistrates had their personal reasons for resigning,” he said.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also revealed that seven new Magistrates will be sworn-in in the ensuing weeks.
The Attorney General said that Court proceedings will not be affected in any way and in fact the capacity would be increased given in particular the appointment of seven new Magistrates.
“Five of these would-be Magistrates are Fijians, one Australian and one New Zealander,” he said.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added there will also be further Expressions of Interest called for interest in the Bench.
