Proposal to declare Rakiraki a town

06/04/2010

The proposal to declare Rakiraki a town began in 1957 and into the early 1970’s when it was shelved. It was reactivated in 1992 through a request by the Ra Rural Local Authority.

On his visit to Rakiraki in the second week of February this year, the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama directed that Rakiraki be declared a town. The process is now underway. The Minister for Local Government, Urban Development, Housing & Environment, Col. Samuela Saumatua, on Friday 26th March 2010, has progressed that directive.

The proposed declaration of Rakiraki Town boundaries was advertised in the Fiji Sun (26/03/10) and also in the Fiji Government Gazette.

The Proclamation Plan PP 695 showing the proposed town boundaries, as described in the Notice, is available for viewing at the following Government offices: Permanent Secretary for Local Government, Urban Development, Housing & Environment, 3rd floor, FFA Building, 4 Gladstone Road Suva; Office of the Commissioner Western in Lautoka; Office of the Provincial Administrator Ra in Rakiraki; Office of the Secretary Ra Rural Local Authority in Rakiraki; and the Office of the Director of Lands & Surveyor General, Government Buildings, Suva.
