Those who threaten the safety of security officers tasked to look after them will be dealt with severely.
This is the message from the Fiji Police Force after a third police officer was assaulted within the space of five days as he tried to make an arrest.
"Let this serve as a warning to those who have no regard for the law, we will come down hard on those who assault our Police men and women in the course of their duty,'' ACP and Chief Operations Officer Henry Brown said.
A police constable was assaulted on the Island of Taveuni yesterday as he attended to a report. He managed to overpower the suspect later, who is now in custody awaiting trial and now his case will also include a charge for assaulting an officer of the law.
Two female officers were also assaulted last week in Cunningham as they tried to control a suspect who was drunk and unruly. However, they managed to take the suspect in later to the Nabua Police Station.
This warning from ACP Brown is in line with Commissioner of Police, Brig-Gen Ioane Naivalurua's comments at a recent parade where he said that those who crossed the line and disturbed the peace and stability of a community must be dealt with firmly.
Police personnel face many risks daily when doing their duty. Last year an officer was stabbed at the Raiwaqa Police Station and almost lost his life.
The perpetrator is now in jail serving a lengthy sentence.
