The long-awaited reopening of Govind Park, now named 'Four R Stadium,' in Ba took place today (31.07.25), marking a significant milestone after being severely damaged by Cyclone Winston in 2016.
Officiating at the event was the Minister for Housing and Local Government Hon. Maciu Nalumisa, who said the redevelopment is a part of a bigger vision where sport is not just seen as entertainment but contributes towards empowerment and local employment.
“The redevelopment for sport purposes is not only for entertainment but also as a driver of health, unity, economic activity, and national pride. It empowers our youth, strengthens our identity, and builds social cohesion.”
“Investment in sports and infrastructure like Govind Park also means more local employment, tourism opportunities, and vibrant local economies.”
With a total cost of $13 million, Govind Park is set to host local rugby and soccer tournaments along with Super Rugby matches and international rugby test series. At the event, Hon. Nalumisa reminded local communities in Ba of the importance of reviving the project, as it holds a deep value to the local people.
“We made it a priority to unlock stalled infrastructure projects, especially those that carry deep community value. We committed $13 million to bring this project to life, and we insisted on timelines, transparency, and quality.
“Today’s occasion marks a revival of a national symbol, a local treasure, and a proud part of our sporting and community heritage. We did not just restore what was lost but built something better and lasting.”
The hard-working team of the Ba Town Council, relevant authorities, and stakeholders were acknowledged for the dedicated reconstruction effort.
Minister Nalumisa reaffirmed the Coalition Government's commitment to Fijians through the support of rural housing grants, the launch of the 2025 clean cities and towns competition, and the development of a modern and sustainable waste solution to serve the division.
