11/11/2014

War veterans and family members today gathered in large numbers to remember fallen troops and those that lost their lives during times of conflict.

His Excellency the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau was joined by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, senior government officials, members of the disciplined forces and the diplomatic corps in observing a minute of silence to remember those that died or served in armed conflict.

The minute of silence was followed by the laying of 32 wreaths in a solemn ceremony led by the head of state.

Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga said that the 11th of November is always a day to remember not only for members of the RFMF but for the military community around the world.

“For us in Fiji, it is a day to remember Fijian comrades that went abroad to fought for the cause of peace,” Brigadier General Tikoitoga said.

“Now it’s more important that we also remember those that have fallen in the cause of peace in UN peace keeping missions.”

Retired ex-serviceman, sixty eight year old Sisaro Vakalawe said that the 11th of November is always an emotional and proud moment for him.

“As a retired member of the RFMF, I always look forward to Remembrance Day as it holds fond memories for me,” Mr Vakalawe said.

“My father participated in the Solomon Campaign so the 11th of November is always extra special for me.”

Members of the disciplined forces this morning began the commemoration with a dawn service at the military cemetery and the Stanley Brown naval base.
