The Republic of Ghana and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations yesterday at a ceremony held at the Ghanaian Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Ghana's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ken Kanda and his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed the joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two developing nations.

The communiqué expresses the desire of both countries to promote mutual understanding and strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation among their two peoples.

The communiqué affirms that relations will be guided by the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and other norms of international law, particularly those pertaining to the promotion of international peace and security, the respect for state sovereignty, equality among States, independence, territorial integrity, international treaties and non-interference in the internal affairs of States.

Following the formalisation ceremonies, Ambassadors Kanda and Thomson held talks on areas of common interest between their two countries, including the political history of both countries, the steady progress of the Fiji Roadmap towards sustainable democracy, the cooperative opportunities available for Ghana and Fiji through the Commonwealth, and the work involved in Fiji’s upcoming chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China.
