The Rotuma Youth Festival 2025 ended on a high note yesterday (28.08.2025) as the Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Jese Saukuru unveiled ambitious plans to develop a multipurpose court, Youth Training Centre and dedicated spaces for economic activities, marking a major milestone in the Fiji Government’s commitment to youth development on the island.
Expressing gratitude to the Gagaj for their invaluable support, Hon. Saukuru stated that the development of the multipurpose court will proceed once the Rotuma Council of Chiefs identifies suitable land.
“Together, we look forward to forging a strong partnership to empower our younger generation and enhance their future opportunities,” he said.
“Very soon, you will witness the unveiling of your new multipurpose court—funded by your government—an exciting step toward more sports, more activities, and more opportunities for all of you. Your new multipurpose facility will soon be ready for use, opening more doors for growth and community bonding.”
In addition to announcing the development of new facilities, the Ministry distributed sewing machines, sports equipment, solar-power tools and sound system set worth $115,000 to various youth clubs across Rotuma, with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship, creativity, and physical well-being.
“Over these past four days, we’ve shared in something truly special—a vibrant celebration of your energy, your culture, and your community spirit. Seeing all of you come together, laugh, learn, and grow has reaffirmed my belief that Rotuma’s future is bright, powered by its youth.”
In the weeks leading up to the festival, the people of Rotuma took part in trainings on garment construction and sewing, tie-dye, small engine repair, and solar power installation organised by the Ministry, and were awarded certificates at the closing ceremony.
“To all the young people of Rotuma and your community, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your active participation has made these four days unforgettable. I hope you’ve enjoyed every moment, picked up new skills, and made friendships that will last a lifetime.
“As you receive your certificates after two weeks of dedicated skills training, I encourage you to use what you’ve learned to better yourselves and your community. You are the future, and you hold the power to shape it.”
