RURAL AND MARITIME ISLANDS TO BOOST STATE OF THE ART SPORTING FACILITIES

Fijians especially those youth living in rural and maritime communities across the country will soon have to access state of the art sporting facilities.

Government has allocated $2.7 million to set up new integrated sporting facilities in rural communities, with the assistance of the Chinese Government.

Salimoni Karusi Director Development Co-operation and Facilitation Division in the Prime Minister’s Office said they are finalising documentation with the iTtaukei Land Trust Board towards the progress of the project.

“We will be finalising discussions on the pieces of land in Gau, Kadavu and Korovou Tailevu for site clearing and commencement of construction,” Mr Karusi said.

“Under this program, in 2013, three integrated sporting facilities will be built at Vunidawa, Seaqaqa and Rakiraki which is being looked after under the Prime Minister’s office,” he said.

Mr Karusi highlighted that through Government’s investment in sport will encourage fitness, healthy competition and social cohesion.

Meanwhile, government has allocated $490,000 for various sporting activities, such as outreach programs, sporting tours, hosting of international tournaments and sports scholarships.
