Rice Farmers raise concerns

08/03/2011

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama ended day one of his northern division tour hearing first hand concerns from the rice farming community at Nasarawaqa in Bua.

During his visit to rice farms in the Nasarawaqa area, he was briefed by Ministry of Primary Industries officials on the development aspects of rice revitalisation programmes initiated by Government.

Issues such as technical support for farmers and their families were discussed in the presence of the Commissioner Northern and heads of government agencies in the division.

Other issues include lack of proper water supply sources and proper roading for the farming community.

Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama advised farmers to make use of the commissioner’s office and pledged support to the concerns raised.

“Make use of the commissioner’s office because Government already have programmes in place and also allocated funds to the commissioner’s office,” he told farmers.

“If there is anything see the commissioner and we will take in from there onwards.”

Commodore Bainimarama also asked Commissioner Northern to look at ways to source proper water supply for the farming community.

On his visit to farms the Prime Minister urged farmers to increase their yields per tones and help contribute to the import substitution programmes that Government had in place.
