Government commissioned a new classroom block and a fresh water supply system for Lomaivuna Secondary School in Naitasiri yesterday.

The school, located in the interior of Naitasiri, is about an hour’s drive from Suva.

This assistance will benefit close to 300 students most of whom travel daily from eight sectors within the Lomaivuna district.

Provincial Development permanent secretary, Col Manasa Vaniqi said Government was committed in developing an integrated development structure at provincial level.

He said the development projects were funded through the building grant programme, which was transferred from the Ministry of Education to the Provincial Development last year.

The school also received government assistance worth $77,000 worth of building materials.

The assistance by the Ministry of Provincial Development includes 1 x 25,ooo liters water tank worth $9000, fittings including louver blades, down pipe, cement, paints, cement block, timber worth $14,515 plus 2 x teachers quarters worth $43,998.06 and a water pump worth $9000.

School Principal, Mr Mitieli Ralesi said this government assistance was timely given that they had made a request last year.

“I was been posted to Lomaivuna Secondary School in 2001, since then this is the first ever government assistance we have received so far,” Mr Ralesi said.

He said materials supplied to the school would benefit the students, especially in terms of achieving better results during external exams.

“Many students will be motivated when they are surrounded by new schooling environment,” Mr Ralesi said.

“This means students in Lomaivuna Secondary School would have a new look classroom and better facilities in 2011.”
