SCHOOLS TO CELEBRATE “MANDELA DAY”

16/07/2014

Schools all over the country have been encouraged to celebrate the ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’ on the 18th of July.

The Ministry of Education permanent secretary Dr. Brij Lal has encouraged schools to observe this day and to identify with values that demonstrate Nelson Mandela’s life and his struggles for equality and justice.

“He is a prominent figure globally and deserves an honorary treatment for his dedication towards freedom and equality. Fiji is in a historical period preparing for election and leaders such as the great Nelson Mandela possess values that lay a sound foundation for the children of this nation,” commented Dr Lal.

As a day set aside by the United Nations, the Ministry of Education permanent secretary said that it was an opportunity for students to learn more on the struggles Mandela faced in his pursuit of justice and equality in South Africa.

“I am urging the education district staff and the teachers to ensure that all schools engage themselves and commemorate this special day. This is an opportunity to impart the sound values of Nelson Mandela to our children to consolidate our effort in making our beloved nation better than we found it”.
