Spawning ensures that future generations will be able to enjoy the same species in years to come.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Fisheries Hon. Semi Koroilavesau during a press conference this morning on the Seasonal Ban on Kawakawa and Donu.
In explaining the rationale behind the seasonal ban, Minister Koroilavesau said, “These two species of fish have reduced drastically in its numbers over the years.”
He added that the ministry will not leave any stones unturned to protect marine resources. Minister Koroilavesau has also issued a stern warning against those intending to violate this ban.
“It is illegal to catch, sell and consume it. We will continue to enforce this ban and fine those found to be breaching this,” he said.
Minister Koroilavesau added that the ministry has asked the public through their consultations in the previous weeks and months to understand why they have put in place these seasonal bans on Kawakawa and Donu.
“We are now asking all our partners including NGOs and religious organizations aligned to Government ministries to assist the Government in passing on the message,” he further added.
The seasonal ban commences from June 1, 2019 and ends on September 30, 2019.
