SHOT IN THE ARM FOR MINISTRY OF WATERWAYS AND ENVIRONMENT

02/03/2019

One of the pre-requisites of quality and consistent Government services in the rural areas is the need for well-maintained infrastructure, says the Deputy Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister Mr. Sakeasi Waikere.

Mr.Waikere, who handed over three excavators to the Ministry of Waterways and Environment, said the three excavators will greatly assist the Ministry of Waterways and Environment in carrying out timely drainage works in flood prone areas.

“These excavators will be used for dump site preparation including drainage works and the clearing of irrigation canals,” Mr Waikere said.

Mr Waikere added that the machines will improve infrastructure in rural areas, including construction of farm roads and preparation of farm lands.

"The Fijian Government is optimistic that the three excavators will be used for its intended purposes for the benefits of the people they serve," he said.

"Especially those whose livelihoods are dependent on well-maintained drainage and irrigation infrastructure."

Furthermore, the Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Waterways and Environment Mr.Joshua Wycliffe was present to receive the brand new excavators.

The three brand new excavators had been donated by the Japanese Government in 2018 through their Grant Aid programme.
