SOCIAL WELFARE PERMANENT SECRETARY TOURS NORTH

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation permanent secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta is on an official tour to the northern division this week.

The two-day tour will commence today with a tour to Nabouono village at Udu in Macuata where Dr Koroivueta will be the chief guest at the official declaration of Nabouono village as a violence free community in Fiji.

Last year, the Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni officially launched the Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community Campaign in Nabouono village that has since undergone 9 months of training and awareness programs with the Fiji Police and relevant stakeholders to address issues like domestic violence, promote gender equality and women empowerment.

Dr Koroivueta’s visit will also be an opportunity for Fijians in Nabouono village to learn about the Ministry’s plans and programs for 2014 and also seek clarification on their social welfare applications. Nabouono is also one of the villages that has been solar electrified last year by a solar engineer who was trained at the Barefoot College in Rajasthan India and she has solar electrified all the houses in her village.

Later this week, a similar program has been organised in Bua where Dr Koroivueta will be the chief guest at the official declaration of Nawailevu village as a violence free community. He will address this community along with Bua village in Bua province on the Ministry’s roles and host discussions on the potential economic empowerment and poverty alleviation projects through can be accessed by these communities to improve their livelihood. Dr Koroivueta will also address the social welfare and women officers in the northern division on the ministry’s upcoming projects and the strategies to achieve the targets set in the Ministry’s Annual Corporate Plan 2014.
