Fiji is moving towards being fully equipped with modern technology to gather information during and after natural disasters.

This follows the donation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) by the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission  (SOPAC)  to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

SOPAC director Dr Russell Howarth said this would help DISMAC collect data on a day-to-day basis.

“SOPAC acknowledges Fiji as one of the founding members of SOPAC and we acknowledge sustainable development by small island nation as the Mauritius Strategy.”

Permanent Secretary for Provincial Development, Manasa Vaniqi thanked SOPAC,  adding that such an equipment would boost DISMAC services.

“We thank SOPAC for donating the equipment which  would be very helpful during natural disasters,” he said.

The equipment includes four desktop computers and four laptops, which will be based at the Divisional Commissioners office.
