Fiji has formalised diplomatic relations with the Republic of South Sudan at a ministerial ceremony at Fiji’s Mission to the United Nations in New York.
South Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Lt. Gen. Nhial Deng Nhial, and his Fiji counterpart, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, presided over the ceremony which took place today. Both signed the joint communiqué that formally establishes relations between the two countries.
The joint communiqué signed by the Ministers expresses the desire of South Sudan and Fiji to promote mutual understanding and to strengthen the friendship and cooperation among their two peoples. It affirms that this relationship will be guided by the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and other norms of international law, particularly those pertaining to the promotion of international peace and security, the respect for State sovereignty, equality among States, independence, territorial integrity, international treaties and non-interference in the internal affairs of States.
Following the signing of the communiqué, Minister Nhial and Minister Kubuabola discussed the strengthening of cooperation between the two developing nations.
The Republic of South Sudan is the newest member of the United Nations, having been admitted in July 2011.
