The Minister for Education, Mr Filipe Bole said that sport in schools is meant to keep students healthy, fit and happy. It is also a socialising activity where students meet new friends within and outside the school.
“Physical Education is part of the school curriculum and sport in schools is to allow our students to live and lead a healthy lifestyle. Sports bring about class bonding, team bonding and also create positive school Spirit. Students who are exceptionally good at a sport as rugby, tennis and golf can make a living out of it if they reach the professional level”, Minister Bole said.
The Minister also highlighted that bad sportsmanship is an issue that the ministry discourages adding that schools should also monitor sporting activites.
“The Ministry of Education will not tolerate unruly behavior as fighting, throwing of items at school buses, bad mouthing of other teams and schools during inter - schools competitive sports tournaments,” added Ambassador Bole.
Principals and head teachers are reminded to keep their teams disciplined and spectators controlled during sport matches. Proper security as well as medical or first aid personnel are to be provided at all tournaments.
