The Northern Primary School Netball Tournament kick-started today after (29.08.23) a lapse of four years, at Bethel Primary School in Labasa, where districts from all over the North are being represented.
The First Lady Filomena Katonivere, in opening the games, highlighted that sports, like academic education, were equally important in developing a child’s life.
“It exposes our children to many important life lessons, it teaches discipline, being focussed, dedication, hard work, commitment, and teamwork,” the First Lady said.
“Sports, like academic learning, are equally important in building a child’s psychological, social skills, communication skills and physical well-being.”
First Lady Filomena added that it contributed to their mental well-being, urging parents and teachers to value sportsmanship for children.
“In order to have a holistic and healthy life, our children should also take care of their mental health,” she explained.
“Sports and in this case, netball plays a vital role in keeping our young netters happy and focused.
“Sports also play a very important role in having a stable and healthy mental health.”
She commended the students for their eager participation as well as the teachers, parents and committees for organising such an event.
The last time this tournament took place was in 2019.
The First Lady also received her typhoid vaccine after officiating at the games this morning.
