STANDARD AGREEMENT TO ENHANCE CAR RENTAL BUSINESS

23/03/2022

The Fijian Government aims to forge partnerships with key industry stakeholders to strengthen the transport sector and meet the demands of Fijians and tourists whilst also making business easier for local operators.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Transport, Faiyaz Koya at the Fiji Car Rentals Association Annual General Meeting in Suva today.

In his address, the Minister reminded members that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on everyone, so much so that everyone has learned and discovered new approaches to work and business.

"I want to reiterate that our lives and our ways of doing business have changed significantly, so the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, with the assistance of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and key stakeholders like you – have implemented new business strategies and protocols to ensure that we can continue to provide high-quality rental services," Minister Koya said.

"I'm confident that members of the Fiji Rental Car Association must understand that there is no simple way to do business during a pandemic. As we provide an effective and safe environment for our fellow Fijians and tourists, we must not only adapt to the new normal but engage in new business innovation and creativity."

Minister Koya stressed to association members that as transport service providers, their role in society is essential as their responsibility is not only running their rental business but to ensure safe transportation to all customers.

Today’s AGM is dedicated to enhancing rental operators' understanding of effective business strategies and operations which also includes the introduction of a standard Rental Agreement for vehicle usage.

This agreement also marks the establishment of a guiding principle to help rental customers, operators, enforcement agencies, drivers and vehicle owners.

Minister Koya further said that to have effective agreements a whole-of-Government approach is certain – this includes support from the Ministry, Land Transport Authority (LTA), Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji (ACCF), Municipal Councils, Consumer Council of Fiji, Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), drivers and respective key stakeholder.

Minister Koya also thanked the Association for their contribution to last week's Central Division PSV Consultation with the Ministry and Land Transport Authority.

The meeting was also attended by the Chief Executive Officer of the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji, Mr Parvez Akbar and Chief Executive Officer of Consumer Council of Fiji, Ms Seema Shandil.
