Every year, in the month of November, we commemorate the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (PCAN) on 19th November and World Children’s Day on 20th November.
These international events celebrate and acknowledge children’s rights and advocate for urgent prevention programs on child abuse and neglect. These events also recognise and reflect on our nation’s progress in ensuring that every child is protected and their rights are fulfilled.
According to the Child Welfare Act National Database, a total of 1,477 cases were reported in 2023. Of the cases reported, 68% were of child neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, and 73% of the perpetrators are known to the victims. Of the 73%, 50% are immediate family members.
The statistics also reveal that child abuse and neglect often occur within a child’s safe space. In most cases, the perpetrator is someone within a child’s immediate family, and this is evident in 50% of the cases reported in 2023.
The statistics have been rising steadily over the years, making urgent intervention and prevention essential. The Fiji Government is dedicated to promoting and safeguarding children’s rights. Over the years, we have collaborated with key child protection stakeholders to effectively and inclusively address child welfare concerns.
This year, we aim to continue raising awareness on parental responsibility. Parental responsibility means providing a safe living environment for your child and protecting them from all forms of harm. Children need a loving and supportive framework to guide and empower them as they grow up. The love and support will pave the way for a positive quality life. This STARTS WITH US.
The theme for PCAN 2024 is ‘’Every Child is one adult away from being a success story. It starts with us.’’
The theme highlights the vital role of fulfilling your responsibilities as a parent or guardian. It emphasises the importance of advocating for children, prioritising their rights, and ensuring their participation in decisions that affect them. By doing so, we can contribute to building a better and brighter future for all children.
In partnership with Save the Children and Asia Foundation, the Ministry will be having a national celebration for PCAN on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Nasova Police Ground. In addition to the national celebration, the ministry’s district and divisional offices will be commemorating PCAN in their respective offices with communities and key child protection stakeholders.
As the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, I invite you all to celebrate and commemorate World Children’s Day and PCAN with us. To raise awareness on child protection and children’s rights and to advocate for children’s issues.
