STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION PERMANENT SECRETARY SHARON SMITH JOHNS

02/04/2012

There are currently reports of missing persons being circulated.

While both the Police and Government are collecting these reports, it is premature to draw conclusions. There are thousands of people in evacuation shelters, many of whom had to leave their homes quickly. Combined with the fact that electricity is out in many areas, inhibiting communications, this all leads to confusion. Police and Government will update cases as they are confirmed.

However, this does not diminish the very dangerous situation we are in with floodwaters. All Fijians MUST stay out of floodwaters. No exception. Debris exists below the surface and currents are very strong. Tell your family, your friends, your neighbors, and anyone you see to stay OUT of flood-affected waters. This is of critical importance. People should call authorities immediately if they see anyone—especially children—near or in flood-affected waters.
