STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTER FOR EDUCATION

06/04/2019

There is public interest in the decision of the Seventh Day Adventist Church to close Vatuvonu SDA College with effect from 18 April 2019. The Hon Minister of Education, Heritage and Arts, Rosy S Akbar, met the SDA President, General Secretary, Director Education and Finance Manager Friday 5 April 2019 to discuss the decision. While the meeting was constructive, the SDA leadership confirmed its decision although they have a meeting of SDA representatives on Monday.

The Hon Minister hopes that the SDA will see its way clear to change its decision in the best interests of the 178 students, 21 teachers and the community which is served by the College. In anticipation that this may not be the case, the Ministry is preparing to support parents to find alternatives for their children to continue their education elsewhere and teachers to be transferred to new posts.

The Hon Minister respects the decision of the SDA and remains committed to ensuring that the students’ access education and the teachers continue to inspire students in and outside the classroom.
