The Ministry for Women, Children and Social Protection is very concerned about the recent attack on an elderly couple in Labasa. One of the victims is still in serious condition at the Labasa Hospital, while the other has been treated and is now recovering at home.
"We thank the Fiji Police Force for their quick response and ongoing investigation. We also urge the public to stay alert and to look out for the older persons in your communities. Please show care and kindness and help keep them safe."
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Hon. Sashi Kiran stated that it is very troubling that our older persons are being targeted in violent acts.
“This is completely unacceptable. Older people deserve to be treated with respect and to live in peace and safety. This incident is a sad reminder of how vulnerable many of our senior citizens are. We must all do our part to protect them.”
“Disrespect of our older persons shows that we failed as a society in instilling these values in our younger ones. Its important to teach our young the value and respect to our older persons.
These teachings need to come from families, schools and religious leaders. We call on all Fijians, especially our young people, to show respect, compassion and care for the elderly. Those who hurt our elders will face full brunt of the law”
The Government continues to support our older citizens through programs like social protection and healthcare. The Ministry will keep working closely with the Police and other partners to stop violence and abuse against the elderly.
To our senior citizens: please stay connected with your communities. If you feel unsafe or threatened, do not hesitate to reach out to local authorities or nearby support services. Your safety is our priority.
Let us all come together as one community and ensure that our elderly can live with dignity, safety, and peace in their homes.
