STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS ON DIGICEL’S PROPOSED ACQUISITION OF SKY PACIFIC SERVICE

30/09/2015

Digicel Fiji has made several statements in regards to the acquisition of Sky Pacific Service, a division of FijiTV, prior to being issued the appropriate license by the Fijian Government.

As a foreign based company, Digicel must obtain a license to provide subscription based pay television services – in line with the Media Industry Development Decree.

Digicel has applied for a licence to the Ministry of Communications, however this license has not been approved for issue. The license is being considered by the Ministry and a decision will be made in due course.

Until such time, no statements should be made regarding the operational control of or any content to be shown by Sky Pacific Service.

It is premature for Digicel to announce any programming or content materials before the issuance of a license. Any such statement can prejudice and pre-empt Government’s authority in this matter and is highly inappropriate.
