SUVA BRIDGES TO CLOSE TOMMORROW

11/10/2012

The Fiji Roads Authority(FRA) will close two major bridges in Suva tomorrow to carry out detailed structural inspections.

The Stinson Parade bridge at the Fish market will be closed to all traffic from midday tomorrow however tonight at 7pm, it will close to allow only single lane traffic.

The Fletcher Road Bridge in Vatuwaqa will only open for single lane light traffic.

“As these bridges are in urgent need of repair, we have taken the decision to close them immediately for the safety of the public”, said FRA Official, Mike Rudge.

“Over the past weeks , we have been carrying out detailed structural inspections on the bridges in the Suva area and we have discovered that some bridges need urgent and immediate maintenance”, Mr Rudge said.

The Fiji Roads Authority has prepared a transport management plan to minimise traffic impacts and delays associated with the Suva Bridge maintenance and upgrading programme.

“Of course this is going to cause delays in traffic but we ask for patience and understanding as we carry out these works for the safety of the public”.

“We are working in cooperation with the LTA, the Police and the Suva city council to manage this”.

There has been no major works carried out on the bridges. As a result the state of the roads and bridges have deteriorated and some are beyond repair”.
