All school head teachers and principals are advised to clarify to their school prefects that their role is one of leadership and setting good examples to their peers in the school.
Minister of Education, Mr Filipe Bole has called on head teachers and principals to remind school prefects that “Students who will fill this role are expected to be leaders of their peers. They must at all times act with decorum and be conscientious of the school regulations.”
In addition, the minister said, “Prefects are intended to be akin to staff members in their enforcement of school rules. As a prefect, a student is expected to act with maturity and work to preserve the school culture and ensure that pupils conduct themselves in an orderly and appropriate fashion.”
“However they must never be allowed to abuse their positions to the extent of hurting their charges. If prefects found in breach of any regulations of the school, they must be counseled and their powers removed if no improvement is seen in them,” Mr Bole said.
The school heads were also advised not to allow prefects to take over the supervisory roles designed only for teachers.
