School zoning

09/11/2010

The Minister of Education, Hon Filipe Bole says the move to zone all government grant aided school in 2011 remains unchanged.

“Our plan to zone all schools receiving government grants beginning next year has not changed,” the Minister said.

“Currently we have two big exercises to complete before we announce that we are ready to proceed.

“These are the approval of the Zoning Decree by Cabinet and the completion of School Enrolment Scheme.

“These should be ready before school starts next year.”

The Minister said school authorities continue to present their submissions on their positions about Enrolment Scheme.

In these submissions, school authorities put in their preferences which the Ministry assesses so that it meets with the criteria relevant to the purpose of zoning.

This has been ongoing.

However, the Minister said some school authorities continue to argue that government should allow parents to reserve the right to choose the schools for their children.

In response, the Minister says, “Government still respects that position but parents will have to pay for any expenses incurred such as transport and textbooks.”
