Schools in darkness in need of light

10/09/2009

In its effort to provide quality education to all children in Fiji, the Ministry of Education is concerned at the number of schools that are still in darkness or without proper power supply.

Through electricity, schools can be equipped with computers, photocopiers and other technological equipment which are modern tools that would raise the standard and quality of the teaching services.

Unfortunately, to date about 62 schools are still without electricity.

The Ministry is conscious of the fact that it would need substantial amounts of funds to provide proper sources of power to these schools.

For the 62 schools to have electricity, it would cost the government $16million if power is sourced from solar energy or $12.5million to have electricity from generators

The Ministry of Education encourages the public to know that it has to share some of the responsibilities of educating the children.

The Ministry is also considering improving the water supply to all schools so that students have safe and clean water for their use while in schools.

These are measures the Ministry of Education is taking to raise the quality of education and to ensure students live and learn in a safe and healthy environment.
