Schools prepare for e-ticketing launch

30/09/2011

Five schools identified by Government to pilot the E-ticketing project have stepped up their preparations in anticipation for its launch this October.

Teachers from Adi Cakobau School, Rambisessar Chaudhary Memorial School, Saraswati Primary Dilkulsha school, Tacirua Bhartiya Pathsala Primary School and Saraswati College have had ongoing consultations with the Government task force, set up to spearhead the e-ticketing machine project.

This has been done with the view to properly prepare schools and educate students on the new concept before the launch.

Schools have been advised on the implementation of the new e-ticketing system, the benefits of such a system and the need for support from stakeholders leading off with teachers, students, parents, bus operators and Government to ensure its success.

This follows Government’s endorsement of the E-ticketing or Land Transport (Omnibus electronic fare ticketing) Regulations 2011.

Transtel, telecom’s subsidiary company responsible for the e-ticketing project, will install 25 consoles in Tacirua Buses for the pilot schools in the Suva and Nausori area.

Transtel will also issue 3000 smart cards to students of these schools to kick-off the program.

Meanwhile, education officials have completed verifying student data from these five schools, and are finalizing data verifications for the remaining schools in time for the October launch date.

The Ministry of Education is reminding schools that have not submitted their verified students data to do so immediately.

The installation of bus fare e-ticketing machines in buses is a milestone project that will revolutionize Fiji's land transport industry.

This is the first of its kind in the area of information technology to be implemented in the industry.

The pilot program will be launched on October 24.
