Schools warned to comply with FTRB regulation

09/08/2010

Despite the Education Ministry’s directive for schools not to entertain individuals and organizations in their schools to impart knowledge and skills, the Ministry has found some schools defying this directive.

While the Ministry acknowledges and appreciates the initiative taken by these schools to seek extra support and training expertise, it is equally important that these individuals are registered under the Category of “Limited Authority to Teach”.

In a Circular issued to schools today, the Education Ministry has issued a warning that schools, individuals and organizations that disregard this directive will have to pay fines under the Fiji Teachers Registration Board( FTRB) Promulgation.

Different organizations have different motives for visiting schools and the primary issue is how beneficial these visits are, the education district covered and the duration of the visit.

An organization can choose to register as an institution for example, USP, on behalf of its teacher trainees who go into school for their teaching practice or the officers within the organization can register individually under FTRB (4) or “Limited Authority To Teach”.

An institution pays $260 after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education prior to registration.

This allows the institution to go into any school in Fiji for the registered year.

Individuals pay $25 and this allows them into the schools for two years.

It is advisable that officers representing these organizations do visit the FTRB Office on Level 1 Senikau House, Gordon Street, for further clarifications.
