Scooter training for 20 police officers

12/08/2011

Mobility, visibility and community interaction are among benefits of a scooter training exercise conducted for officers of the Fiji Police Force.

Twenty police officers are undergoing the two weeks training course on how to operate a scooter at the Ready Action Unit conference room.

The course is a follow up to the launch of new police scooters at Nadi this year.

The force purchased 10 scooters in April to assist officers to increase mobility and to cut down response times in attending to reports that were lodged.

Most of the 20 participants are among 99 police constables, who graduated from the Fiji Police Academy recently after undergoing 16 weeks of Basic Recruit Training.

While opening the workshop the Chief Operations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Henry Brown, challenged participants to put in their best effort so that they could make a positive impact in the services the force provided to the public.

“Learn as much as you can and make a difference when you come out of this course,” ACP Brown said.

“I demand the best from you so that you can make an impact in the community, make an impact to others and enjoy your working environment.”

He reminded police officers to also “top up” their knowledge of new laws being decreed by Government and that police officers must articulate exemplary behavior by observing road rules while carrying out their duties.

The course contents are, Introduction to Motorcycles, Safety Training, with participants also getting hands on experience on how to ride and operate a scooter.

Mr Achari said scooters that would be used in the training had been tailor made for new drivers who had no experience in driving one.

Fifteen police officers also went through a similar training earlier this year.

Residents of Natokowaqa in Nadi have remarked to police that the presence of a scooter at their Community Post has resulted in the reduction in criminal activities within the neighborhood because of the frequency in patrols.

The workshop will end on Friday, August 19.
