Government has stressed the need for schools in Serua province to utilize their government grants better.
Acting principal education officer, Mr Pita Cavakilagi when highlighting this during the Serua Provincial Council meeting, said Government through the Ministry of Education would provide grants to each school.
“It’s important that the grant is used wisely and what it is meant for,” he said.
Previously, school management had misused government grants.
Mr Cavakilagi said these grants must be used for education purposes only.
“All receipts and acquittals must be clarified when making payments or purchasing,” he said.
“Government grants must not be used for other purpose like kava drinking, traveling expenses or any other matter that does not relate to education.
“When submissions are made for extra grant the Ministry of Education will verify all receipts before approval is made.
“Government would like to see that grants directly benefit school children for their educational purposes.”
Mr Cavakilagi also elaborated on zoning policy and changes in management to lift the standard in Serua schools.
Changes were based from records, which showed some schools registered very low pass rates.
“Mainly those based along the coastal areas, some teachers have been in these schools for too long,” Mr Cavakilagi said.
“We will pay regular visits to Namosi and Serua as of next year, simply because there is a need to raise the standard of education within the two provinces.”
