Seventy new laws since 2007

04/12/2010

There have been 70 changes or amendments in laws of the legal framework in Fiji since 2007 says Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He made these comments in his address to Fiji’s legal fraternity’s 12th annual Attorney General Conference underway at the Sofitel Denarau in Nadi.

More than 350 lawyers are attending the two days conference.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said lawyers needed to question these changes and why the Bainimarama Government was bringing about these changes.

“If you’re able to rationalise that, then you will be also be able to anticipate the changes in the years to come particularly in 2014,” he said.

“There are also a number of changes taking place domestically and internationally.

“We need to ask what is the impact of these laws, is it harmful to anyone, is it discriminating anyone or is it indeed bringing down these barriers of discrimination.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said changes in our laws were attributed to changes to international law and also relate to political change in the international sphere which brings to the fore changes in attitude internationally.
