Twenty five families living in Bay View Heights are relieved Water Authority of Fiji project workers have completed sewer upgrading works that began in December of 2010.
Prior to the upgrade, stench was unbearable, especially when the septic tanks were overloaded.
WAF project workers laid a 200mm new sewer main to the area.
These households usually have their communal septic tank and whenever it rains heavily it overflows.
During overflows WAF would have to send a truck to bail the septic tank.
At the moment the WAF operation team is still in the process of testing the new sewer line, after which it will be fully utilised followed by the decommissioning of one of the sewerage
pumping stations in that area.
The total cost of this project is $70,000 with the engagement of eight workers and the use of an excavator for digging and burying of sewer pipes. It took three weeks to complete the
project.
A similar upgrade was undertaken at Fletcher Rd, where residents faced similar problems during heavy downpours.
The WAF carried tests to the line and upon locating the cause of the overflow, carried out a two- day project involving 17 project workers to lay 15 meters of 200mm
sewer line.
Upgrading also meant backflow prevention to avoid overflows. The entire project at Fletcher Rd, cost $12,000.
