Six new Justices of the Peace sworn in

Six new Justices of the Peace were sworn in by Chief Justice Anthony Gates last week.

Their appointments were confirmed earlier this month by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

In welcoming the new Justices of the Peace (“JP”) Ministry for Justice permanent secretary Mr Christopher Pryde said that a Justice of the Peace played a very important role in the administration of law and justice in society.

“It is a position, which commands considerable respect in the community and which binds the conscience of a Justice of the Peace to do right to all manner of people in accordance with the laws of Fiji without fear or favour, affection or ill-will,” he added.

JPs perform such functions as administering oaths for affidavits of service in civil proceedings, witnessing documents, and assisting members of the public complete forms under various laws and issuing search warrants.

Mr Pryde also stressed to the new JPs that they must not take fees or gifts of any kind for performing any of their duties.

Fiji has 220 active JPs spread throughout the country.

The six new Justices of Peace are Amin Insurance managing director Mr Anandilal Amin, Ms Susan Falu from Kioa Island, Mr Fereimi Cama from Holy Trinity Cathedral, Mr Anirudh Singh from the Ministry of Labour, Mr Mukesh Nath from the Attorney-General’s Chambers and Mr Tito Rabosea from Rewa Secondary School.
