Solar power for 34 schools

12/08/2009

A total of 34 schools around the country will soon have electricity from solar power, courtesy of the European Union under its Fiji Education Sector Programme.

The schools stand to benefit from a funding assistance with a total of $3,363,080 worth of solar power units, which will be installed in the schools providing them with their source of electricity.

The choice of solar power over diesel generators by the Programme is in line with the EU’s policy of supporting a clean environment and sustainable renewable energy sources. These solar power units will provide a model for the Ministry of Education in terms of provision of sustainable energy sources to schools and with low recurrent costs.

The Ministry of Education is thankful to the European Union for its continued support to the education sector and look forward to continued support in future.
