The National Sports Policy is now under review to align it to modern developments in the sporting arena.

Officials from sports federation and other stakeholders met in Suva this week to discuss the issues under review.

The meeting was organised by the Department of  Youth and Sports.

The National Sports Policy which was in a draft amendment form was open to scrutiny by stakeholders and they were encouraged to  give comments and recommendations on the changes they wish to include in the policy document.

Those present include FASANOC, Fiji Sports Council, Cricket Fiji, Fiji National University, Department of Youth and Sports, Fiji Squash Association, Fiji Surfing, Fiji Womens Golf, Fiji Correctional Services, Fiji Swimming Association, Body Building Fiji and RFMF.

Director Youth and Sports Ms Makereta Sauturaga gave a brief history of the policy document while officiating at the meeting.

“This Policy document was endorsed by Cabinet in 2003 and not only has it become the center piece of document for the implementation of sports in Fiji, it has also been made relevant to the needs of the sporting fraternity for 7 years,” Ms Sauturaga said.

She reminded stakeholders and sports federations to bear in mind the relevance and  how realistically the sports policy is able to address the changing needs of the sporting fraternity in Fiji.

“The review of the sports policy that you will deliberate on today will be able to propel Fiji to be more competitive in sports in years to come,” she said.

Ms Sauturaga said that Government has also enacted legislations for the regulation of sports in Fiji.

“The Peoples Charter for Change and progress provides the freedom for all citizens of this country to participate holistically in the development of social justice program. These are significant platform for the review of the National Sports Policy,” Ms Sauturaga said.
