The precautionary measures that were put in place in anticipation of Tropical Cyclone Tomas (“Tomas”), in particular, given the inability to precisely predict its path, were necessary. Such precautionary measures were put in place to protect people and property.
It is evident that wherever Tomas has struck, the damage has been overwhelming. However, the full impact of Tomas in the Northern region, the Lomaiviti and Lau Groups is yet to be determined.
All we can say at this stage is that the effect of Tomas in these parts of Fiji was extensive and damaging.
While we still wait for the final assessment from these regions, Fiji, which had stopped working and schooling as part of the precautionary measures, must return to normal activity.
It is important to recover the lost days of productivity and education. We must come together as a nation. We must also do so for our fellow citizens who have suffered loss of livelihood and shelter.
Therefore, the public holiday for National Youth Day set for next Monday 22nd March will now be a normal work and school day.
All employers, employees, civil servants, schools and teachers are hereby informed.
The National Youth Day celebrations shall be held on a date to be determined.
