Students attend media workshop

Students and teachers along the Suva- Nausori corridor attended a two-day media workshop coordinated by the Fiji Media Watch with the theme “Children, Media and Consumption.”

Fiji Media watch is concerned with helping students develop an informed and critical understanding of the nature of the mass media, the techniques used by them, and the impact of these techniques.

Mrs Lusiana Senibulu, the media educator with the Fiji Media Watch, stressed the importance of educating students on the positives and the negative effects of the media on students.

“In improving the quality of life of a student, it is vital that the student acquires the necessary skills to understand, interpret, and evaluate information in order to be able to make informed choices,” Mrs Senibulu said.

The keynote speaker, who is an officer from the Ministry of education, emphasized on the effects of mass media on students and the community as a whole.

One of the seven objectives of the Fiji media watch is ‘to awaken students, teachers, parents and youths to the impact, the mass media is having on their lives, both positive and negative.

Fiji Media Watch was formed in 1993 and founded by Father Larry Hannan who also attended the opening of the two days workshop at the FTA Hall on Tuesday 1st of March.
