Students awed ministerial team with traditional presentations

Reviving or maintaining traditions and customs is a practice that a ministerial delegation to the Lau group witnessed on its recent tour.

Minister for Education Mr Filipe Bole, leading other officials from his ministry to the island of Lakeba were treated to traditional ceremonies by students of Ratu Finau Secondary School last week.

The students performed a full Fijian traditional welcome ceremony to the minister and his team before the opening of their new classroom blocks.

“It is admirable to see these young men, so confident in their presentations,” Mr Bole said.

Dr Brij Lal applauded efforts by teachers who train students and emphasised to them the importance of customs and traditions.

“We are thankful because the Department of National Heritage, Culture and Arts also comes under our ministry,” Dr Lal said.

The students also presented a ‘lakalaka’, a traditional meke that people of Lau are known for.

Mr Bole encouraged schools not to neglect students from learning more about their cultural identity.
