Survey teams visit islands in Macuata

A survey and initial relief team made up of Government officials from the Ministry of Health, Education and Agriculture left Suva on Wednesday 17th March 2010 onboard the RFNS Kula bound for Cikobia.
The team stopped over in Malau, Vanua Levu to pick up emergency relief rations as well as other Government officials from the Ministry of Education, Red Cross, Telecom Fiji and the Indigenous Affairs.
The Roko Tui Macuata Sitiveni Lalibuli said he was tasked by the Divisional DISMAC North to lead a team to Cikobia, Naqelelevu and Yacata to survery the damage left in the wake of Hurricane Tomas and to report on the initial needs of these islands.
Damage to crops and fruit trees in Cikobia
Mr Lalibuli said that from the assessments made on Cikobia, the island has suffered extensive damage to its roots crops and trees.
Meanwhile the team continued onto Naqelelevu yesterday afternoon.
All six houses on the island were washed away during the storm surge and the thirteen (13), inhabitants on the island are taking shelter in a Telecom Fiji radio house, which measures only 2x2 meters.
The inhabitants include six fisherman stranded on the island since Hurricane Tomas. Emergency supplies of flour, rice, sugar, water, tents and black packs was delievered to the island.
The team continues onto Yacata today, and will stop over in Savusavu for a re-supply of relief rations.
