THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK: FIJI UNITES FOR ONLINE SAFETY

05/11/2025

Today is not another event. It is a movement — a nation standing together to make our digital spaces safer, smarter, and stronger, declared the Minister for Policing and Communications, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, at the launch of the Miss Fiji Online Safety Song and the 1548 toll-free helpline.

Emphasising that online safety is not optional — it is essential, the Minister said the Government is leading through law, technology, and humanity.

In launching the Online Safety Commission’s new helpline, 1548, Minister Naivalurua said that it provides free and confidential access to counselling and justice for anyone facing online harm.

1548 is more than a number. It is a national commitment, the Minister stated.

It connects every Fijian to help — instantly, freely, and confidentially. This is what leadership sounds like.

Through the Online Safety Commission, the Fiji Police Force, and our education and youth networks, we are building systems that protect, empower, and respond — and today, we add another layer: a direct line to help, he added.

Minister Naivalurua also launched the Miss Fiji Pageant campaign song, Think Before You Click, performed by Miss Fiji contestants. The song aims to spread awareness through music — reaching schools, buses, and villages with messages of respect and kindness online.

Music moves hearts before minds, the Minister said, while thanking the artists, producers, and Miss Fiji 2024–2025, Manishka Prasad, for their advocacy.

Our young women are not just participants — they are ambassadors of a safer digital Fiji.

He also acknowledged Fiji Rugby players and students of International School Suva for joining the campaign, stating that true leadership doesn’t stop at the try line — it continues online.

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s full support for the Online Safety Commission, stressing a zero-tolerance approach to both online and offline harm.

When you pause before you post, you protect someone’s peace. When you share 1548, you save a life, he emphasised.

Minister Naivalurua sent a powerful reminder: Together, we will make Fiji’s digital world as beautiful, bold, and compassionate as its people.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Online Safety, Mr. Filipe Batiwale, emphasised the importance of addressing online safety, highlighting the need for a collective effort involving Government, youth, artists, and the private sector.

He also stressed the urgency of tackling issues such as cyberbullying, scams, and image-based abuse, which impact homes, schools, and communities.
