TRIPARTITE DELEGATION ATTENDS ILO 16TH ASIA AND THE PACIFIC REGIONAL MEETING

A tripartite delegation consisting of the Fijian Government, employers’ representative and workers’ representative is attending the International Labour Organisation 16th Asia and the Pacific Regional Meeting in Bali Indonesia this week from 6 to 9 December 2016 to discuss regional world-of-work priorities and the vision for decent work.

The delegation is headed by the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Hon. Jone Usamate and he is accompanied by his permanent secretary, Salaseini Daunabuna.

The other members of the delegation include the chief executive officer of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation, Nesbitt Hazelman as employers’ representative and Felix Anthony the president of the Fiji Trade Union Congress as workers’ representative.

Minister Usamate said that this year’s meeting also includes a discussion on building an inclusive future with decent work and working towards sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.

“The Report of the ILO Director-General as presented in the ILO Asia and the Pacific Regional Meeting will highlight the progress made in the Asia and Pacific Region in terms of decent work under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, future changes, and the way forward,” Minister Usamate said.

“Other discussions that will be held during the meeting include inclusive growth for social justice, fair migration with a focus on recruitment, skills for the future, strengthening social dialogue for inclusive and sustainable growth, and promotion and application of the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy in Asia and the Pacific.”

Minister Usamate will also get an opportunity to address the meeting on Thursday 8 December 2016 to respond to the Report of the Director-General of the ILO on decent work and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific with a specific focus on Fiji.

The ILO Asia and the Pacific Regional Meeting brings together the ILO’s tripartite constituents from throughout Asia, the Pacific and the Gulf and Arab States which consists of approximately 450 participants, Government Ministers, representatives of workers’ organizations and representatives of employers’ organizations and academics from about 40 countries.
