Teachers are asked to improvise, be innovative in their work and not to rely a lot on textbooks.
“With school to begin at the end of the month, a lot of parents are under pressure to buy textbooks and supplementary materials listed by the schools. Parents can be relieved if teachers work with them by changing their teaching approaches. Teachers are therefore advised to improvise and be innovative,” the Minister of Education, Filipe Bole said.
“Textbooks are teaching tools only to guide teachers and not to be treated as the centre of learning. In fact our teachers and schools are surrounded by learning materials, which children can be exposed to. This is where improvisation and innovation comes in.
“Teachers are also advised to build their own collection with textbooks and reference materials which will help them in research work.
“School heads and managements are also requested to buy textbooks and reference materials for teachers to use. This is why we need schools to have libraries at least for teachers. If all our schools can do this, parents need not buy a lot of textbooks.” the minister said.
