Teachers briefed on termite infestation

13/05/2010

Teachers stood bewildered yesterday as an awareness team of Operation Kadivuka made a presentation on the deadly Asian Subterranean Termite at the Lautoka Teachers College.

The awareness team was greeted by the Head of School Professor Subhas Chand and more than 20 staff teachers at the College who came to hear first hand information on the infestation occuring in Lautoka.

The awareness team comprised biosecurity officer Mr Nilesh Prasad, Lautoka district advisory council head Mr Faiaz Ali and community policing officer Sgt Benedito Bola.

Teachers were also shown samples of the termite. According to Professor Chand, concern arose after the discovery of termites at the college and thus requested for an information session with the awareness team.

Three staff quarters and two trees were found to be infested with termites as a taskforce team continued its area survey at the college yesterday.

Professor Chand applauded the efforts of the taskforce team in trying to contain and eradicate the termite from biosecurity declared zones around Lautoka.

Teams continue survey today with the hostels and the establishment of the college boundary.

Complaints or queries on the termite infestation can be directed to the Operations Centre Hotline 6281553 or 6286198.
