Teachers of Vanuabalavu in the Lau group were urged to be fully aware of students’ capabilities in computer literacy, a fact they cannot afford to ignore.
The Minister of Education Ambassador Filipe Bole made the call to alert teachers because students adapt themselves fairly easily and quickly with computers.
“It is advisable that you teachers improve your computer literacy by owning computers and get connected to the Internet for research purposes. Students these days are computer friendly and are literate which you may find difficult to reconcile with. The last thing we teachers expect is to have our children well ahead of us,” the minister said.
Computer education will begin next year amongst primary school. However with most secondary schools teaching forms six and seven, research work will be most needed. The Internet would be the most accessible and updated source of information compared to physical libraries.
Most island schools are accessible to mobile phones which this shows that they can log into the world wide web. Some of these schools also have generators for electricity and even solar panels for power.
The computer lab in Adi Maopa is powered by the school generator and solar panels.
