The Department of Environment would like to inform members of the public on the danger of a plant commonly used as ornamental plants.
It is scientifically called the Dieffenbachia seguine and is a species of Dieffenbachia.
They are popular house plant because of its tolerance to the shade.
Th e plant species is native to the Americans from Mexico to Brazil and several Caribbean islands.

They are commonly called “dump cane’ because of its poisoning effect to the human throat.
Through mastication and ingestion they generally result in mild symptoms.
However , when chewed, it can cause unpleasant symptoms, including oral irritation, excessive drooling and localised swelling.
When swallowed or eaten , these plants can be poisonous and can cause death.
Members of the public are therefore advised to be cautious of these plants and to keep them away from the reach of children.
